Mr. James W. "Sketter" Kirby Jr., 75, of 12135 Forest Hill Road, Waynesboro, Pa., passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa.

Born Jan. 8, 1937, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late James W. Sr. and Claudene (Long) Kirby.

He spent his early life in Hagerstown, Md., until moving to Waynesboro in 1962.

Mr. Kirby was a graduate of Hagerstown High School with the Class of 1955.

He married Sara Jane (Shindledecker) Kirby, Dec. 8, 1962. She passed away Aug. 30, 2000.

He later married Mrs. Mary T. (Clapsadl) Mickley-Kirby, April 26, 2003, at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, Fairfield, Pa.

Mr. Kirby lived at his present residence since 1989.

In his early life, he was employed by H.L. Mills Supermarket, Hagerstown. He later worked for his father at R.C. Dr. Pepper Bottling Co., Hagerstown, until 1965. From 1965 until his retirement in 2000, he owned and operated Kirby's Hardware Store in Rouzerville, Pa.

Mr. Kirby was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church, Fairfield, where he served as a trustee and auditor.

He also was a life member of Blue Ridge Sportsman's Association and member of Eagles Club Inc. and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1191, both of Waynesboro, and American Legion Post 239, Cascade, Md. He also was a former board member of Washington Township Municipal Authority and served as supervisor of Washington Township from 1995 until 2004.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Debra L. Sprankle of Falling Waters, W.Va., William Douglas Kirby of Williamsport, Md., and Dennis L. Kirby of Panama City, Fla; two stepsons, Charles Mickley and Andrew Mickley, both of Fairfield; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one stepgreat-granddaughter; one sister, Penny Dawson of Hagerstown; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and second wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Mahone.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Kim Philips officiating. Burial will follow in Quincy Cemetery, Quincy, Pa.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
