Alice Lee Snively of Pasadena, Maryland died July 28, 2013 at the age of 66. Originally from Salem, Indiana, she was the daughter of Geneva Alice Graves (related to the Graves of Gunsmoke fame, Matt Dillon) and Robert Lee Packwood. Alice was an eclectic and an aesthete with particular interest in and connection to wildlife. She was a student of many “-ologies”. She shared her love of music, food and spirits throughout her life with friends and family. She was a painter, nightclub singer, perfumer, gourmand, accountant, freelance writer, author and reporter as well as senior partner in several business enterprises. She won many awards in national wood carving contests. In recent years she is remembered for her dedicated service to the Maryland Yacht Club where she lived with her husband Hugh Snively for the last 13 years. She was only the second female Commodore in the club’s 106 year history and the only person in memory to have served in all five of the major Bridge Positions. She was very proud of her service and loved the beautiful pastoral setting and abundant wildlife surrounding the club. She was always impatient to start the annual, several week long, spring and fall cruises with her husband on their 43 foot, sloop rigged, Columbia Yacht, Cherokee II. For six years running the fall cruise coincided with either a named hurricane or a strong Noreaster hitting the Chesapeake Bay. Alice was required to post sailing dates so that everyone would know when to prepare for a major weather event.
She was predeceased by her parents and step father Calvin Spurgeon. She is survived by her husband, children, Danielle and Joshua Riley, her brother Keith Spurgeon and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers or other tributes, Alice requested that contributions be made to the charity of your choice in her name.
